Man Bear "Feeling Kind of Lo(Fi)" Album Review

by William Chaffin

Man Bear sounds like a cherry flavored cola tastes in 106 degree heat. It's not the sweat flowing copiously out of your pours-it's the sweat forming on the side of your ice-cold drink. Your perfect pair of Levi jeans & your worn out paperback copy of SE Hinton's The Outsiders. This music is so fucking cool that it might stay gold forever. Adios Pony Boy. Man Bear is that heavy metal princess in high school whose free spirit formed a fog around her as she strutted the newly waxed floor on the first day of school & you fell in love with her but never told her & she disappeared halfway through the school year never to return again.

Man Bear drips with so much cool that I imagine it being born in the back pocket of the heavy metal princess' old Levi jeans. Her sudden exodus from school & the gorgeous & tragic adventures in the years that followed. And when you heard a rumor years later that she had died you imagined her driving gallantly into the abyss of life's perfect bullshit with her headphones blaring a cassette mixtape labeled "How to Get Kicked Out of School in Twenty Songs." Music so incredibly wonderful that it only belonged to her, her homemade haircut and the beat up Honda adorning bumper stickers of punk bands that never gave a second-thought to the idea of "making it."
Why on earth anyone would deny or dismiss the beauty & importance of DIY Indie Rock is beyond me. The Lo-Fi DIY scene is exactly what this town needs to embrace and with much expedience. I wanna believe that "Feeling Kind of Lo(Fi)" is a Kansas City DIY/Lo-Fi manifesto & with other bands in the genre falling suit: Lazy, ddean cassidy, Kitten Tits, Vitae & The Pale Horse...Kansas City may very soon realize the gold mine of amazing music that is DIY & embrace it as the revolution it has become.
How about we just call it the Man Bear revolution and hang those old Levi's on the flag-pole of every existing giant in Kansas City?
